Protagonist-Found bodly in Titanic the below web page gives a wonderful explanation regarding this term-even offers some situational ideas- While Some have pointed to Leonardo’s character Jack as the protagonist- this in may opinion is not accurate. Jack comes second to Rose-played by Kate Winslet. She tells the story starting at the beginning from her perspective and while this web page states that a rival or antagonist will often be present and Cal was clearly Jacks rival- Cal and Roses mother were hers.

Diegesis-Ichose this in representation to water world- the main idea that caught my attention is there are alot of assumed  events in this film. The below web page also touches base on more the just then meaning of Diegesis in regards to film. I highly recommend this site to understand this concept.

Jeanne, after reading your post, I decided to take a look at your resources. Good explanations! It seemed obvious to me as well, that Rose was the protagonist in Titanic (1997, James Cameron), even though Jack was clearly the hero. Your resource does state that the hero and/or narrator are not always the protagonist, but I can see where the two can be confused. In Titanic, however, the story clearly revolves around Rose. I find the easiest way to identify the protagonist is to ask myself which character I know the most about at the end of a movie (or book).

I also chose to research the diegesis element, and your resource helped to further expand my perspective. My resource indicated there are non-diagetic elements in films, but I could not think of an example. Your resource goes into more detail, explaining that elements such as subtitles and insert shots are not a part of the “world” of the story, and therefore non-diagetic. Now I understand this element more fully.

Thank you for offering more insight to the protagonist and diegesis elements. There is a final comment I want to make that I hope will be of help. Shelley indicates, that to receive full credit for this assignment, we need to use MLA style when citing our resources, both in-text and in our reference lists. She offers links through the course home page that really help with the formatting.

You’ll want to be sure to use MLA style for your full bibliographic citations for full credit.
